SB233-Common Course Numbering/Transfer Legislation
IFS Statement:
April 9, 2021 IFS believes that the fundamental aspect of SB233 lies in the composition of the subcommittees. In particular the development of Faculty Curriculum Subcommittees (FCS). Each committee will be composed of faculty members from the appropriate discipline and represented by each of the universities and community colleges. Faculty members will be appointed by their senates or representative groups in consultation with their provost or chief academic officers. These FCS will be charged with determining common learning outcomes for the purpose of acquiring a common course numbering system. We believe that these subcommittees are vital to accomplish the overall purpose of SB233.April 11, 2021Senator Dembrow,Thank you for taking the time to meet with members of IFS on Friday. We appreciate your commitment and dedication to making the transfer of credits among higher education a smoother transition for our students. We support SB233 and look forward to seeing this bill come to fruition. However, we see the importance of the development of the subcommittees as a crucial element to the success of SB233. Please provide faculty members a means to see common course numbers be successful and end the long efforts of “lost credits” among our students by allowing faculty members full participation in the process. IFS believes that the fundamental aspect of SB233 lies in the composition of the subcommittees. In particular the development of Faculty Curriculum Subcommittees (FCS). FCS shall be composed of discipline specific faculty representatives from every Community College and Public University offering courses in the discipline. Recommendations from Faculty Curriculum Subcommittees to the Transfer Council shall require endorsement of both a majority of the participating Community College faculty and a majority of the participating Public University faculty. These FCS will be charged with determining common learning outcomes for the purpose of acquiring a common course numbering system. We believe that these subcommittees are vital to accomplish the overall purpose of SB233.
Senator Dembrow, please allow faculty members to be the driving force in the success of SB233.
